- Jean Paul Riopelle (Canadian-French, 1923-2002, considered Canada's most consequential artist of the 20th C)
- born in Montreal, where he studied and exhibited, then travelled in 1946 to France for the first time while working as a horse groomer. Later, inspired by the French Surrealists, he encouraged Les Automatistes in Canada to produce Le Refus Global (Total Refusal), an anti-establishment manifesto signed by 16 artists which was published in 1948 and caused an uproar.
